Marker or felt-tip pen (marker) Water-based or alcohol-based. Water-based markers can be left to dry first, then wiped off with a damp cloth — sometimes nearly all of it comes off. Permanent markers are the hardest. Alcohol helps to some extent, but a faint mark usually remains. Getting it out 100% is very difficult, especially if the stain has been sitting for several hours.

Start by gathering 4 things: cotton balls, 70% alcohol, a clean microfibre cloth, and a leather conditioner for the final step.
- Patch-test a hidden area first: before applying alcohol to the actual stain, dab a little onto a cotton ball and wipe the underside of the cushion or the back of the sofa where it won't show. Wait 2–3 minutes. If the colour doesn't change, you're good to continue.
- Wipe gently from the edge of the stain inward: never wipe outward from the centre — that spreads the stain. Dip a cotton ball in alcohol and press lightly on the stain one small spot at a time, holding it there for 5–10 seconds before lifting.
- Change cotton balls every time: once a cotton ball has absorbed ink, swap it for a fresh one immediately. Reusing the same ball will transfer ink back onto the leather.
- Follow up with a damp cloth: once the stain has faded, wipe the area with a microfibre cloth dampened with clean water and wrung out well, to remove any alcohol residue left on the surface.
- Condition the leather right away: alcohol draws some moisture out of PVC leather. Apply a thin layer of leather conditioner and buff it off with a soft cloth — this keeps the surface from drying out and cracking over time.
The whole process takes roughly 20–30 minutes depending on stain size. If the stain fades but doesn't disappear completely, you can repeat 2–3 rounds with about 5 minutes between each round to let the surface rest.

What's actually achievable with old stains is making them less visible, not making them disappear entirely. On dark-coloured sofas (deep brown or black), a faded stain usually blends in well enough. On light-coloured sofas like cream or beige, a faint shadow may still be visible.
